Hymn for the Steadfast for concert band
2017 Bandworld Top 100 Selection
A beautiful work composed to honor a beloved music teacher, this piece showcases your woodwind soloists before giving way to the full band. Lyrical and technically accessible, "Hymn For The Steadfast" will provide ample opportunity to teach phrasing, intonation, and balance. A wise musical and pedagogical choice.
Steadfast: "resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering."
Program Notes: Hymn for the Steadfast was commissioned by the Roanoke Rapids (NC) High School Band Class of 2016, and dedicated to their teacher Ms. Laura Manning. The slow introduction of the work, which spells out “LAURA” in a musical cryptogram, presents the basis for the original hymn that is then taken up in turn by solo woodwinds, a brass choir, and the finally the full band. The result is a thoughtful and moving piece for band that honors the work of Ms. Manning and every other teacher who works so hard to enrich and impact the lives of their students.
