At the confluence of the Morava and Danube rivers, just where Slovakia meets Austria, the expanse of time seems to hesitate, giving visitors a window into the past. On this rocky crag, with vistas stretching into three countries, stand the ruins of Devín Castle, a silent witness to a millenium of change and turmoil that has marked the history of this region. Constructed on the site of an ancient Roman encampment, the castle’s history has encompassed the fall of the Great Moravian Empire and incursions by first the Magyars, then the Turks. Later, this castle was destroyed by Napoleon’s armies and further witnessed Hitler’s annexation of Czechoslovakia. It has most recently stood watch on the border of the Iron Curtain and seen the birth of an independent Slovak Republic. Inspired by the intense sense of history at this site, “Incantations” is a series of musical scenes depicting various emotions and images generated by the view from Devín Castle.
Colorfully orchestrated, the mysterious and ethereal Incantations utilizes octatonic pitch structures, layers of ostinati, and Fibonacci proportions to create a dramatic ten minute work for orchestra.
